Ex-Dream Theater members Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian came by Going Off Track to talk about their new progressive metal supergroup Sons Of Apollo, which also features former members of Guns N’ Roses, Journey and Mr. Big. Along the way we also discuss the duo’s 25-year relationship, the time Portnoy got a private tour of Frank Zappa’s studio and reminisce about Sherinian’s dream gig playing alongside Eddie Van Halen at his house during a porno-soundtrack party. “Billy Sheehan our bass player has an expression he uses all the time, ‘if you think, you stink’,” Portnoy replies when asked about what it’s like to write and perform such complex musical arrangements. “You shouldn’t have to be concentrating on what you are doing onstage like a robot, it should be something you feel and it naturally happens.” Sherinian concurs adding, “No one is born out of the womb playing Chopin etudes, you have to grind in the beginning but the key is to do the grind and then forget about it. Music is a feel thing and you don’t want to suffocate the muses by grinding it.” Admittedly this is a little bit of a different podcast for us but this duo have a massive amount of talent and knowledge to pass along here and we’re happy to receive it from them… even if we’ll still never be able to play in a 15/16 time signature.
